Confidentiality Policy

The Disability Center views all materials pertaining to a student’s disability as confidential. Governmental mandates, including Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) all support this policy in their encouragement of the protection of privacy. FERPA

Colleges and universities abide by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). FERPA is a federal law that ensures the privacy of students’ educational records and gives students the right to inspect and request amendments to those records.

Grades, course schedules and transcripts are among the data considered to be educational records and not directory information. In accordance with FERPA, the university can neither discuss nor share non-directory educational records with anyone other than the student, including parents, without the student’s written permission. Waivers may be obtained at the written request of the student. Forms are available at Summer Welcome or online.

If you are a parent, step-parent or guardian of a student with a disability and you want to talk with the Disability Center staff about him or her, the office must have a written release signed by the student to be able to speak with you. Release of information to parents and guardians is addressed in the general Release of Information form.
