Confidentiality

Faculty are expected to respect the confidentiality of students with disabilities. Governmental mandates including Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) all support the protection of privacy.

Accommodation memos

Accommodation memos prepared by the Disability Center for instructors do not give specific information regarding a disability. The memos explain that the student has a disability and that the Disability Center has documentation to support the student's need for reasonable accommodations.

A student may choose whether to disclose details about his or her disability. Instructors should keep this information confidential and avoid unnecessarily drawing attention to a student's disability.
